This is the map to check when you suspect your best content, pricing, testimonials, or your call to action, is sitting below the point where people give up. A surprising number of pages bury their strongest argument at the bottom, assuming visitors will scroll to find it. Scroll maps tell you plainly whether that assumption holds.

Watch for a steep drop right after the fold. If 70% of visitors never see anything past the first screen, no amount of copy improvement further down the page will move the needle. The fix isn't better writing, it's reordering the page so the important part comes first.

What a click map actually shows you

A click map (sometimes shown as a confetti map or a heat overlay) records where people click or tap, regardless of whether that spot was actually clickable. This is the map for questions about intent and confusion.

Click maps are especially good at surfacing two problems: dead clicks, where visitors tap something that isn't a link or button because it looked like one, and rage clicks, where someone clicks the same spot repeatedly because nothing happened. Both are signals of friction that a scroll map simply can't show you, since scrolling and clicking are different behaviors driven by different intentions.

If your bounce rate is high but people are scrolling the whole page, a click map is usually the better next step. Attention isn't the problem. Something they tried to interact with didn't work the way they expected.

How to match the map to the question

A simple way to decide which map to pull up first:

  • Suspect people aren't seeing your offer or CTA at all: start with a scroll map.
  • Suspect people see it but aren't clicking: start with a click map.
  • Suspect a specific element (an image, a badge, a block of text) is confusing people: start with a click map, since dead clicks and rage clicks cluster around exactly those elements.
  • Trying to decide where to place a new section on the page: start with a scroll map, then confirm with a click map once the section is live.

Neither map replaces the other. Used together, they tell a fuller story: the scroll map shows how far people get, the click map shows what they do once they're there.

A quick example

Say a pricing page has decent traffic but a low click-through to checkout. A scroll map might show that most visitors reach the pricing table just fine, attention isn't the issue. A click map on the same page could reveal that people are clicking on the plan name or the feature list, not the actual "Start Free Trial" button next to it. That's not a copy problem. It's a layout problem, and only the click map would have caught it.

The map doesn't fix the page. It just stops you from guessing which part of the page to fix first.
